We see dogs and cats at the clinic and on home visits across Nairobi. Traffic decides a lot here, so each page below is honest about how long it actually takes us to reach you.
Karen Karen plots are large and many are only partly fenced at ground level, so dogs here roam far more of their own territory than a Westlands dog does. That means more contact with ticks in long grass and more chance of picking up something from a neighbouring property's animals. Kileleshwa The Nairobi River tributaries run through the valley below Kileleshwa and the ground stays damp well after the rains. Hookworm, which needs warm moist soil to persist, is a more realistic concern for dogs walked down there than in the drier suburbs on higher ground. Kilimani Kilimani has converted from single houses with gardens to apartment blocks within roughly a decade, and a lot of the dogs did not change with it. We see medium and large breeds chosen for a garden that no longer exists, and the resulting under-exercise shows up as weight gain and joint problems earlier than it should. Lang'ata The Nairobi National Park boundary runs along Lang'ata and the fence is not continuous. Hyena move out of the park at night along this edge and pets left outdoors are genuinely at risk here in a way they are not elsewhere in the city. Bringing dogs in overnight is standard advice for the park-side streets. Lavington Lavington households are settled and long-tenured in a way Kilimani and Westlands are not, and their pets are correspondingly older. More of our Lavington work is geriatric: arthritis, dental disease, kidney monitoring and end-of-life care, rather than puppy courses. Parklands Parklands has a large community cat population, many of them semi-owned: fed by several households, belonging to none, and reproducing freely. Most sterilisation questions we get from this area concern a cat the caller does not technically own, which is a different conversation from a straightforward pet spay. Runda Runda has a well-established vervet monkey population moving between compounds. Dogs chase them, monkeys defend themselves, and the resulting bite and scratch wounds go deep and infect readily. They also carry a rabies exposure question that has to be taken seriously rather than waved off. Westlands Westlands has gone vertical faster than any other part of Nairobi, and high-rise living produces a specific injury we see repeatedly: cats falling from balconies and unscreened windows. Cats do not reliably land safely from apartment heights, and the injuries are jaw, palate and chest.
