- Westlands has gone vertical faster than any other part of Nairobi, and high-rise living produces a specific injury we see repeatedly: cats falling from balconies and unscreened windows. Cats do not reliably land safely from apartment heights, and the injuries are jaw, palate and chest.
- Apartment pets here are overwhelmingly small breeds, and small breeds get dental disease early and badly. A four-year-old Westlands terrier is far more likely to need a dental than a four-year-old Karen ridgeback.
- Very few Westlands flats have private outdoor space, so litter tray problems and stress-related urinary trouble in cats are commoner here than anywhere else we cover. A blocked male cat is a genuine emergency and apartment cats are over-represented.
- Construction is constant across Westlands and dust, noise and disturbed rubble affect pets kept on lower floors and balconies. We see more respiratory irritation and more anxiety cases here than the density alone would explain.

Balcony and window falls in cats are the injury we would most like to stop having to treat. Mesh across the opening solves it completely and costs very little. Cats do not have a reliable sense of the drop, and a passing bird is all it takes.
Small-breed dental disease is the other Westlands pattern. Apartment dogs here are small, small mouths crowd their teeth, and gum disease starts young. Bad breath in a three-year-old dog is not normal and is usually the first sign.
For cats, the combination of no outdoor space and a busy household produces stress-related urinary problems more often here than elsewhere. A male cat straining in the tray and producing nothing is an emergency measured in hours.

How do I make a balcony safe for a cat?
Mesh or netting across the opening. Cats judge the jump, not the drop, and a bird or an insect is enough to commit them. This is the most preventable injury we see in Westlands.
My indoor cat has never been outside. Does it need vaccinating?
Yes. Rabies is a legal requirement regardless of lifestyle, and cat flu can arrive on your shoes. Indoor status reduces risk, it does not remove it.
