Nairobi Vet Care

Vet services in Lang'ata

The national park runs along one edge and the KSPCA sits inside the area. Lang'ata has both the highest wildlife interface and the best low-cost options in Nairobi.

Getting to you

Lang'ata Road is the main artery and is heavily congested at peak in both directions. The Southern Bypass helps at some times of day. Home visits here are best booked mid-morning.

Parking at the clinic

Parking is generally easy across Lang'ata.

Keeping a dog or cat in Lang'ata

Lang’ata has the sharpest wildlife interface of any residential area in Nairobi. The national park boundary is right there and the fence has gaps. Hyena move along that edge at night and take pets. Owners on the park-side streets generally know this; people who have recently moved in often do not, so it is worth saying plainly: bring dogs and cats in overnight.

The area also has the best access in Nairobi to subsidised veterinary care, because the KSPCA headquarters is here. We would rather tell you that than have a vaccination or a sterilisation not happen because of cost. It is a genuine option and it is close.

The housing mix is wider here than in the western suburbs, and free-roaming and semi-owned dogs are commoner. That makes rabies vaccination locally more important, not less: your dog’s cover protects it from the dogs it meets on the street.

Common questions

Is the hyena risk real?

Yes, on the park-side streets. It is not every night and it is not everywhere in Lang'ata, but dogs and cats left out overnight along that boundary are taken. Bringing them in costs nothing.

Should I use the KSPCA instead of a private clinic?

For routine sterilisation and vaccination in a healthy animal, it is an excellent option and it is on your doorstep. For a sick animal or one needing monitoring, a private clinic has more capacity. We will tell you honestly which your situation calls for.
