Vet services in Karen
Big plots, big dogs and a wildlife boundary. Karen has a different set of veterinary problems from anywhere else in Nairobi.
Getting to you
Karen is a straightforward run outside peak, but Ngong Road and Langata Road both seize up badly at rush hour. For a home visit here we would rather agree a mid-morning or early-afternoon slot than promise a time we cannot keep.
Parking at the clinic
Parking is easy across Karen and there is no difficulty bringing a large dog by car.
Keeping a dog or cat in Karen
- Karen plots are large and many are only partly fenced at ground level, so dogs here roam far more of their own territory than a Westlands dog does. That means more contact with ticks in long grass and more chance of picking up something from a neighbouring property's animals.
- The Nairobi National Park and Ngong forest edges are genuinely close. Hyena and leopard incidents involving pets are uncommon but not mythical in this part of the city, and dogs left out overnight on the forest side are at real risk in a way they simply are not in Kilimani.
- Working and guarding breeds are heavily represented here: boerboels, German shepherds, Rhodesian ridgebacks. Large deep-chested dogs carry a specific and time-critical risk of gastric torsion, which is why we are blunt about a hard swollen belly being an emergency.
- Horses and livestock are kept on several Karen properties, so acaricide dips and pour-ons meant for larger animals are often already on the premises. Those products cause poisonings in dogs and are lethal to cats.
Karen’s veterinary problems come from space. Large plots mean dogs cover ground, meet other animals, and spend real time in long grass where ticks wait. Tick-borne disease is the single thing we would most want a Karen dog owner to take seriously, because it presents as nothing more than tiredness until it is advanced.
The wildlife boundary is the other genuine difference. Properties backing onto forest or park edge should bring dogs in overnight. Cats are harder to control and owners here generally know it already.
The breed mix matters too. Karen has more large, deep-chested dogs than any other part of Nairobi, and gastric dilatation and volvulus in those breeds is measured in hours, not days. A hard swollen belly with unproductive retching means come now.

Common questions
My dogs live outside on a large Karen plot. What matters most?
Tick prevention, kept up year-round without gaps, and rabies cover. Outdoor dogs on big plots meet more wildlife, more neighbouring animals and far more ticks than an apartment dog.
Is the wildlife risk real?
On the forest and park edges, yes. It is not a nightly event, but bringing dogs in overnight is a sensible precaution on those boundaries and costs you nothing.
