- Runda has a well-established vervet monkey population moving between compounds. Dogs chase them, monkeys defend themselves, and the resulting bite and scratch wounds go deep and infect readily. They also carry a rabies exposure question that has to be taken seriously rather than waved off.
- Dogs here are frequently kept primarily for security and live outdoors on large compounds, often handled mainly by staff rather than the owner. That means changes in condition get noticed later, and we often see animals presented once a problem is well advanced.
- Compounds are large and walled, which keeps dogs in but does very little to keep ticks out. Long grass at compound margins is the standard tick reservoir in Runda and it is rarely the part of the garden anyone maintains.
- Households here turn over frequently with diplomatic and expatriate postings, so pet export paperwork comes up far more often in Runda than in most of Nairobi. The rabies titre timeline is what catches people out.

The vervets are a genuine clinical issue, not a curiosity. Dogs chase, monkeys bite back, and the wounds are deep punctures that look small and close over dirt. They need cleaning properly. They also raise a rabies question, which is one more reason the annual vaccination matters here.

My dog was bitten by a monkey. Is that serious?
Yes, on two counts. Monkey bites go deep and infect readily, so they need proper cleaning and usually antibiotics rather than watching. And it raises a rabies exposure question, which is a conversation to have with us the same day, not next week.
