Deworming your dog in Kenya
Worm pressure in Kenya is higher than in temperate countries and the schedule is tighter. Dosing is by weight, which is where most over-the-counter deworming goes wrong.

The weight problem
This is where most deworming in Kenya fails.
Dewormers are dosed by body weight. The tablets sold at agrovets are typically one size, and the number of tablets is what changes. A 5kg terrier and a 40kg boerboel do not take the same amount, and buying “a deworming tablet” for a large dog delivers a fraction of the effective dose.
Two practical consequences:
- Weigh the dog properly. Owner estimates run low, consistently. Most clinics will weigh your dog for free, and it takes a minute.
- A price per tablet is not a price per dog. At KES 100 to 250 per tablet, deworming a large dog properly is several times the cost of deworming a small one. That is normal and correct, not a clinic overcharging you.
Which worms actually matter in Kenya
Roundworms dominate in puppies and are what causes the classic pot-bellied, thin-spined look. They pass from the mother, so puppies are effectively born with them.
Hookworms cause anaemia and are worse in warm, damp conditions, which describes much of the coast and a good deal of Nairobi in the long rains.
Tapeworms are the one foreign guides underplay for a Kenyan reader. Echinococcus, the hydatid tapeworm, is carried by dogs and is a serious human health problem in parts of Kenya, particularly in pastoralist communities. Dogs pick it up by eating raw offal from slaughtered livestock. People pick it up from dogs.
If your dog has any access to raw offal, or lives around livestock slaughter, tapeworm cover is not a routine tick-box item. It matters to your household, not only to the dog.
Why the foreign schedules do not transfer
Temperate-country guidance assumes a winter that interrupts transmission. Kenya has no such break, so worm pressure runs year-round and the intervals need to be tighter. Advice built around a British or Australian parasite calendar will leave gaps here.

Why this is different in Kenya
- Hydatid disease, caused by a tapeworm carried by dogs, is a genuine public health problem in parts of Kenya, particularly pastoralist areas. This is a human health issue, not only a dog one, and it is the reason dogs that eat raw offal need much more frequent tapeworm treatment.
- Year-round warmth means there is no winter break in transmission. Temperate-country schedules assume a seasonal lull that does not happen here.

Common questions
How often should I deworm?
Puppies and kittens every two weeks from two weeks old until twelve weeks, then monthly to six months, then every three months for most adults. Dogs that scavenge, hunt, or are around young children may need it more often.
Can I just buy tablets from the agrovet?
You can, and many owners do. The two things that go wrong are underdosing, because the dose is by weight and people buy one tablet, and using the same product every time, which is less effective against the full range of worms.
Does deworming need a vet visit?
Routine deworming for a healthy adult does not. Get your dog weighed properly first, though, because an estimate is usually low. A puppy, a sick dog or a dog with visible worms should be seen.
Why does my dog still have worms after deworming?
Usually underdosing, reinfection from a contaminated environment, or a product that does not cover the worm your dog has. If it keeps happening, bring a stool sample rather than repeating the same tablet.
